This time we added Iowa to our list of states visited, staying at the Tailwater East Campground below the dam at Lake Coralville on the Iowa River.

Tailwater East was a beautiful recreation area.

This trip we were able to see Don Guckert and his wife Sylvia, and we went to dinner with Steve Thweatt.

The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is in West Bend Iowa.

After the museum, we went downtown and ate at Basta, where we noticed a series of bronze relief panels in the sidewalk. The Iowa Avenue Literary Walk celebrates works by 49 different writers with ties to Iowa, from Kurt Vonnegut and Flannery O’Connor to Tennessee Williams. The Literary Walk was completed in 2000 and is comprised of a series of bronze relief panels that feature authors’ words, visually connected by quotations stamped into the concrete sidewalk. For dinner it was Funcrest Dairy and Grill!

Don and Sylvia took us to the Kalona Historical Village, an Amish and Mennonite village where we bought some fudge and cheese and had lunch at Tuscan Moon. On the way back, they showed up where Captain Kirk of Star Trek will be born. That night we went to listen to Don’s band, The Remains, where I also saw an old friend, Jeri Ripley King.
