Van Horn TX and the start of a Trost Hotel Tour?

April 2, 2019 to April 16, 2019

Van Horn RV Park
Van Horn, TX

More than one person asked us why the first stop was somewhere close to Las Cruces like Van Horn, but if you think about it, the first waypoint of a journey is generally near to the beginning just by definition. We plan to limit our driving to no more than three to five hours a day anyway, and even though setting up the RV takes only half an hour, we like to stay a day or two and see the area one that’s done. Also, ElizaBeth spent part of her youth in Van Horn, and she wanted to see how things have changed. We decided to stay for two weeks, get the RV organized, and chill out. So far, so good.

The Whatnot Dilemma

May 18 to April 2, 2019

Hacienda RV Park,
Las Cruces, NM

ElizaBeth had the great idea to rent a spot at Hacienda RV Park in Las Cruces and then start shuttling supplies from the house to the motor home. We settled on a step-by-step process that consisted of driving a loop: triage the items at the house and drop some off to Goodwill. Deliver the rest of the load of “good stuff” to the motor home to see if it would fit. If there was no space in the motor home, the article then went to Goodwill on the way back. Repeat. Frequently, things that had already been loaded in the RV were pulled and replaced with more important items. Just as with corrective maintenance at work, it’s not about what you need, because it is all-important; it’s more about what you want most. Priorities.

Alpine, TX – the beginning of an adventure

I have been privileged to serve as the Associate Vice-President for Facilities and Services at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces for the last ten years and am planning to retire this spring. ElizaBeth and I will live and travel full time in our 30-foot Itasca Sunstar RV, at least until we have visited all national parks, every state fair, or when we get ready to do something else – whichever comes first.

I like to write and want to try a novel set in higher education that will have to be fiction since nobody would believe what really goes on. After working in facilities management since I was 16, I have done every job there is from cleaning to high voltage electrical switching and am pretty handy, and I may submit some articles on RV repairs and maintenance. We have been able to complete a few consulting jobs for other institutions and would like to get more customers. Advancing my limited knowledge in fly fishing is on the agenda, but mostly we just want to take it easy.

We have been relaxing in the RV over long weekends and took a sort of shakedown cruise over the Winter Break, spending Christmas at Alpine, TX. We fried a turkey, read books, and to paraphrase Hollywood Henderson, mostly didn’t do anything and didn’t start that until after lunch.

I have had this website URL for years, and this past week relocated the site to a different host and WordPress. I would love to have you join us as we start our new adventure.
